Found Cats Policy

There is no legal obligation for cat owners in Ireland to have their cats microchipped at present.  However, if your cat is handed into a rescue, then a registered microchip provides irrefutable proof of ownership and makes it far more likely that you will be reunited with your lost pet.

Our policy for the management of stray/found cats is as follows:

  • All stray cats that come into our care are scanned for the presence of a microchip. If the chip is present and registered to an owner, we will contact that owner.  However, if the chip is not present, is unregistered, or the contact details are not up to date, then the cat will be regarded as unowned.
  • We will advertise unowned, ‘found’ cats on our social media and alert other rescues.  It is the responsibility of the owner to actively look for their missing cat.  We are a ‘no kill’ rescue, so if no owner has come forward within seven days, then we will begin the rehoming process.
  • Owners who come forward to claim their cat while it is still in our care will be liable for any vet costs incurred.  Proof of ownership will be required.
  • Once a cat has been rehomed, legal ownership passes to the new adopter.  We will neither pass on details of the new owners, nor will we ask the new owners to return the cat to us.
